Loughborough University Making revision digital
Loughborough University has an international reputation for excellence in teaching and is home to one of the biggest engineering schools in the UK. With a commitment to supporting the next generation of budding engineers, the university has been sharing its expert maths knowledge with GCSE, AS and A-Level students for 13 years.
These revision aids, called Mathscard, were offered in the form of foldable Z-Cards and later an app, which pupils could download onto their smartphone or tablet. Over time, however, the app had become outdated and needed to be replaced.
Having impressed Loughborough University with previous projects, we were approached to design a new website, iOS app and Android app for the AS and A-Level curricula.
Teenagers spend hours on their smartphones or computers, so digital platforms are the perfect place to provide academic support.
After being briefed by Loughborough University, we set to work building a highly functional and user-friendly Mathscard app and website. With curricula often changing, we created a straightforward content management system for updating content on both platforms. By enabling the university to easily update the content themselves, students can be assured that all learning materials are current and correct.
We also suggested that the branding across the mobile apps, website and Z-cards should be consistent in order to create a seamless experience for teachers and pupils, who may be using different devices at home and in the classroom.
Feedback has been extremely positive and ratings on both iTunes and Google Play have been consistently high. Users have dubbed it a ‘fantastic free resource’ and have highly recommended it to both colleagues and students.
The website has been particularly successful. Following a promotional mailer highlighting the new site, more than 21,000 orders were received online in just one week. We also implemented a new, more sophisticated order function to help reduce duplicate orders and unnecessary print costs. This has aided database management and made it much easier for Loughborough University to contact its customer base.
“The dedication and hard work that RKH put into this project has resulted in two fantastic apps which have exceeded my expectations for numbers of downloads and are currently the highest rated free maths apps on the app stores. I’m really confident we have created a product that represents the high qualities of the university and are providing an unrivalled education app experience to our users.” - Kieran Dye, School Marketing Officer for Engineering at Loughborough University.
